One of the most enjoyable movies I saw this summer was the movie, Mama Mia!. I completely enjoyed this movie and since there was a family connection it meant even more. It was really fun going to see the movie with my brother and sister-in-law and commenting on her cousins performance in the movie. My family went to see it opening weekend. I recently went to a Christian singles ice cream social on 8/8/08, the night of the opening Olympics. I was hoping to see the Opening night ceremonies. I did not go to eat ice cream because I am trying to lose weight but I had something to enjoy. I also wanted to enjoy some time with friends, the same friends I went to play miniature golf. I was hoping things would be different. I sat down in my friends living room crowded with singles and they were watching the movie "Mama Mia!". I thought it was very strange since the movie just came out. I wondered where this was purchased from. I was telling my friends of my "family connection" to the movie and had some enjoyment watching it with my "friends". But then, the color faded out and and the movie did not seem like the quality Hollywood film I went to see only a few weeks earlier. So I asked, "Where did this movie come from?" I was then told it was a "boot-legged" movie bought on the black market down in New York City. I was outraged! I know the copy right laws because I am a screenwriter and they protect MY work. But who was protecting the work of the people who worked on Mama Mia? It surely was not coming from my friends who claim to be "strong Christians". Since it was them that bought the movie, could they go to jail? I am not sure. How do the copyright laws work in this case? I was also outraged because just a few weeks earlier I was belittled for my political views for supporting Barak Obama. They did not believe and challanged me if Barak Obama was a believer. How hypocritical of them to criticize me or Barak Obama for our political views and then go out and buy a black market DVD! What hypocrites! This group of so called Christians, who I have lost my respect for, is also getting into peoples faces that if they don't believe in Jesus they are going to Hell. They do all kinds of evangelism but compromise on this very big issue. I did not say anything that night but left in anger. I was not sure if I should have made a big deal there, but I will find a more opportune moment to speak my mind. After all, I feel I need to protect the work of my co-professionals in the entertainment business, even before I get there. It makes the struggle to become a screenwriter more important for me to protect my work and those of others. |

Where did this movie come from?

Likewise my husband used to reprimand our kids when they were in high school when they burned a CD that they borrowed. Now it appears to be common practice.
